It's All About Me
Nikki Jeane, E&R Intern

"It's all about me!" is the catchy motto of Person-Centered Planning, also known as P-C-P, here at The Baddour Center. The Baddour Center began using P-C-P in July of 2007, and it has been a hit with the resi dents and staff ever since!

One of the key elements in using Person-Centered Planning at The Baddour Center is the P-C-P books. Each resident is given a book titled IT'S ALL ABOUT ME AND "MY LIFE" –My Personal Profile. This book is packed with questions for every aspect of a person's life. The goal of these questions is to give the resident and the people they al low to read the book, their P-C-P team, ideas to better support that resident's wants and needs.

Within the P-C-P book are nine sections which have different types of questions for the various aspects of the residents' lives. One section is "People In My Life". In this section there are questions about the resi dent's roommates, friends, helpful people in the community, co-workers, and other im portant people in their lives. These questions range from wanting to spend more time with certain people to not wanting household help from others. This information can be used to understand who the resident would like to live with, have in their life, or not spend as much time with. There is also a page which has a "People Map". This map helps to map out people who are close or im portant to the resident who may assist them in their meetings to make decisions for their life. Other than the people who are asked to be involved by the resident, no one will be allowed to read their answers.

The other sections include questions about things such as work, special occasions, fun activities, and dreams and goals. Each of these sections is full of easy-to-understand questions! An example of a question in the "Things I Can Do" section is: There are many things I can do well. Things I do well are... If there are any questions that a resident does not understand the members of their P-C-P team are there to help. Some resi dents choose to complete the books without help, while others visit with individual mem bers of their teams to compose their an swers, and still others like to hold meetings with their teams to go through the questions together as a group.

At the end of the P-C-P book there is a page titled "It's My Choice". This page asks what the resident's priorities are after complet ing the book and if they would like anyone to help them plan their meetings. These meetings will be designed to listen to the resident's priorities for how they want their lives to be now, and what they want to work toward for the future. From that informa tion, we will develop a Person-Centered Plan, which will take the place of the old habilita tion plans.

What do the residents think about P-C-P?
