Happy New Year!

The New Year always brings a mixture of excite-ment and anxiety as we think forward to what lies ahead. It is a time for plans and resolutions, and in the Education & Research Division we've been thinking about what we'd like to accomplish in the coming year.

We are excited to announce the date and topic of our Spring Symposium. April 23 and 24 will find us listening to the wisdom of Dr. Ann Poindexter, a former Baddour Center Trustee and a nationally recognized expert in the topic of mental health care for people with intellectual disabilities. Dr. Poind-exter will present information on the etiology, diag-nosis, and treatment of mental health disorders in people wtih intellectual disabilities.

The in-service training schedule has also been set, with an agenda that includes the cognitive effects of aging; teamwork; activities for people with less developed verbal skills; and resident rights. I am particularly excited about the resident rights pro-gram, because it will be led (appropriately enough) by Baddour Center residents.

Thanks to those of you who participated in our newsletter survey, we have also made plans for some of the topics and interviews we'll include in Volume 9. Keep an eye out; maybe you'll see your recommendation. By the way, if you have sugges-tions you can always send them to me; no need to wait on a survey!
