Tradition continues with 30 - 0 record

Senatobia, Miss., October 17, 2009 - They talk a lot of game to their opponents but always back it up. They’ve got a perfect Homecoming record: 30 – 0. Who are they? The mighty Baddour Crusaders! The Homecoming theme “Things Change But Our Tradition Remains” was even in sync on Friday, October 16, when the Crusaders, a team of Baddour residents, defeated Baddour employees – also known as the Wimpy Warriors – for the 30th year in row.

“The RGA [Resident Government Association] begins making plans for Homecoming Week months in advance,” said Melissa Baker, Director of Community Life for The Center.  “Residents, staff, and friends of The Center greatly anticipate Homecoming each year.

“This year we used memorabilia as decorations. Seeing all of it brings back a lot of memories, but it’s also a reminder that Baddour traditions haven’t changed,” said Baker. “Residents – and making sure they lead fulfilling lives - have been and continue to be our focus. Homecoming is one of many ways we do that.”

Homecoming festivities included a kick-off event, pre-game meal for the Crusaders, spirit week, Alternate Vocational Services Garden Party, pep rally, and flag football game.

“Homecoming is a week-long celebration about the gifts God gives each of us, from athletic abilities to dance moves,” Baker said. “It’s about laughing with friends and making memories together.”

With performances by the Crusader Cheerleaders, Baddour Dancers and the Wimpy Warrior Cheerleaders at the pep rally, the Mighty Crusaders couldn’t help but be excited about the big game. Although the game was called due to rain, the Crusaders took away another victory, as the team scored two touchdowns before the Wimpy Warriors could even get their game plan in order.

Halftime presentations were moved indoors due to the weather, which gave residents, employees and guests a closer view of the 10 princesses and the eight princes. Excited and surprised, residents John R. and Barrett V. were selected by their peers as the 2009 Homecoming King and Queen.

Surrounded by memorabilia from The Baddour Center’s past 30 years and with a DJ spinning some of their favorite tunes, the King and Queen didn’t stay seated in their purple velvet thrones very long. Instead, they joined their friends on the dance floor, making memories and keeping true to the tradition that life at Baddour is fun.

The Baddour Center is dedicated to providing a model residential community for adults with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities in an environment that promotes maximum growth intellectually, spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally, and vocationally.
